Details:
The Belcher Lab at MIT is using biology to develop better batteries and other technology. In this research, a genetically modified virus is used as a template to grow manganese oxide nanowires. When combined with palladium, these nanowires can be used as a lithium-air battery electrode. The resulting battery is lighter, cheaper, and more compact than current Li-air batteries, and a great candidate for powering vehicles.
